Forward Deployed Engineering

Engineering that starts inside the customer problem.

A Forward Deployed Engineer works directly with the people, systems and data around a problem, then writes and ships the production software required to solve it.

01

What FDE actually changes

Traditional delivery often separates discovery, architecture, implementation and operations across different teams. FDE compresses that distance. The engineer learning how the workflow really behaves is also able to change the software, integration or data system that makes it behave differently.

02

Where it is useful

The model is strongest when the problem crosses boundaries: AI plus operations, product plus integration, data plus decision-making, or a customer deployment that does not fit a clean product configuration.

03

Services FDE vs vendor FDE

A vendor FDE normally helps deploy one company’s platform. Enable FDE is a services model: the outcome can span your own applications, cloud, APIs, data and third-party products rather than being limited to a single vendor stack.

04

What you should receive

Working production software, tests, documentation, measurable operating improvement and a system your team can continue to own.

FAQ

Common questions.

Is an FDE a consultant?

An FDE can perform discovery and advisory work, but the role does not stop there. The defining feature is hands-on ownership of implementation and deployment.

Is FDE the same as staff augmentation?

No. Staff augmentation usually adds capacity against a client-owned backlog. An FDE is expected to help discover and own a defined customer outcome as well as write the code.

Does FDE only apply to AI?

No. AI has accelerated the model, but the same approach is useful for data platforms, integrations, internal tools, customer deployments and complex software operations.

Start with an outcome that matters.

You do not need a complete specification to start.
